Contemplation

Contemplation

Be still and know that I am God! (Psalm 46:10; NLT).

Stand in silence in the presence of the Sovereign LORD (Zephaniah 1:7; NLT).

Be silent before the LORD, all humanity (Zechariah 2:13; NLT).

Lord,
With every in-breath,
I turn to you,
Opening my heart
To absorb your love.

And with every out-breath,
I whisper your name,
Letting go of my thoughts,
And turning back to you.

Again and again, like this,
I turn to you,
Letting go of my thoughts,
Opening my heart,
Whispering your name,
And absorbing your love -

Until it’s time
To face the day ahead,
With you.

Peace

Peace

I search for peace (Psalm 120:7; NLT).

The LORD will mediate between nations and will settle international disputes. They will hammer their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will no longer fight against nation, nor train for war any more (Isaiah 2:4; NLT)

“ ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind. And, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ ” (Luke 10:27; NLT).

Lord,
I pray for peace and love
In every hawkish, warring mind,
Every bitter, angry heart,
And every damaged, suffering soul,
Throughout your world.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Path

Path

I can never escape from your Spirit! (Psalm 139:7-; NLT).

…even in darkness I cannot hide from you (Psalm 139:11-12; NLT).

O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me
(Psalm 139:1; NLT).

… lead me along the path of everlasting life (Psalm 139:23-4; NLT).

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love (Ephesians 5:1-2; NIV).

Father,
There is nowhere to hide from you!

You know my every thought,
Word and deed.

You know exactly how I am,
And how I feel.

Please forgive all my sins,
Heal me in body, mind and soul,
And lead me along your path of love,
To everlasting life.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Past, present, future

Past, present, future

The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature (Romans 8:3; NLT).

The LORD says, “Then I will heal you of your faithlessness” (Hosea 14:4; NLT).

Their weakness was turned to strength (Hebrews 11:14; NLT).

“ ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind. And, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ ” (Luke 10:27; NLT).

Lord,
My past is full of unbelief;
My present, full of weakness.

Please forgive my faithlessness;
Heal my sinful nature;
And turn my weakness into strength.

Then my future will be full of love for you,
For everyone I meet,
And even for myself.

In Jesus’ holy name,
Amen.

Prayer

Prayer

From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised (Psalm 113:3; NIV).

Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice (Psalm 55:17; KJV).

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; NIV).

Lord,
May I wake up praising you
Each morning,

Rejoice in your presence
Throughout the day,

And fall asleep thanking you
Each night.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Self or others?

Self or others?

Depression haunts my days (Job 30:16; NLT).

“I am nothing” (Job 40:4; NLT).

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34; NIV).

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love (Galatians 5:6; NIV).

Father,
After church today,
However bad I feel about myself,
And however much I long
To escape from social contact,
Please help me
To overcome my awkwardness,
My lack of confidence,
And my miserably low self-esteem.

Help me instead
To think of others –
To notice those who look lonely,
Unwell,
Anxious,
Or depressed -
The ones who need to talk.

Then help me to approach them
With a smile,
Offering my interest,
Friendship,
Care,
And love –
As Jesus did.

In his dear name,
Amen.

Courage and strength

Courage and strength

The LORD is my strength (Exodus 15:2; NLT).

But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” (Matthew 14:27; NLT).

Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ (Ephesians 4:15; NLT).

Father,
Whenever I’m afraid
To say what I need to,
I feel powerless,
Anxious,
And depressed.

Please give me
The courage and strength I lack.

Help me
To speak the truth with love,
As Jesus did,
So I can become
Just a little more like him.

Amen.
