Faith

Faith

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1; NIV).

“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you”
(Matthew 17:20; NIV).

For we live by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7; NIV).

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love (Galatians 5:6; NIV).

Father,
Please help me to go forward in faith,
Knowing that you want me to serve you,
Confident that my task will emerge
At the right time,
And trusting that you will equip me
To fulfil it.

In Jesus’ precious name,
Amen.

Service

Hi, I’m sorry that you received an early, unedited version of this blog yesterday – I pressed the “publish” button by mistake, and off it went! I tried to cancel it, but emails can’t be recalled…

So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth (Revelation 3:16; NIV).

Father,
Please show me how I can serve you.

Don’t spit me out of your mouth
For being neither hot nor cold -
A mediocre, lukewarm Christian,
Who fails you constantly.

Please show me
How you want me to serve you -
Then help me to obey.

I ask this in your dear Son’s name,
Amen.

A dedication

A dedication

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength (Mark 12:29-30; NIV).

Father,
Please help me to become
The person you want me to be;

To serve you
In the ways you wish me to serve;

And to love you with all my
Heart, soul, mind and strength.

I ask this in Jesus’ holy name,
Amen.

Love your neighbour as yourself

Love your neighbour as yourself

But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner” (Luke 18:13; NIV).

The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise (Psalm 51: 17; NRSV).

Humility is the fear of the LORD (Proverbs 22:4; NIV).

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience (Colossians 3:12; NIV).

Love your neighbour as yourself (Matthew 22:39; NIV).

Father,
I don’t love myself.

I criticise myself all the time
For being weak, useless and unlikable,
For constantly failing you.
But is this what you want?

Is low self-esteem
 the same
As having a humble, contrite spirit?

I need to know, Lord,
Because I’d never talk

To anyone else
The way I talk to myself.

In any case,
How can I truly love and encourage others,
When I find it so hard
To love and encourage myself?

Surely there must be
A happier, healthier way to live
Than constantly putting myself down
And feeling bad about myself?

Lord, I fall short of your commands
In every possible way.
I do my best,
But I’m only human.

Help me to relate to myself
With the compassion, kindness,
Humility, gentleness and patience
You give to me.

Then I will truly be able
To love my neighbour as myself.

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God” (Mark 10:27; NIV).

Father,
I long to serve you -
But I need to know your will,
And to be well enough
To carry it out.

Please show me your will,
Give me the strength I lack,
And help me to obey.

In Jesus’ precious name,
Amen.

Authenticity

Authenticity

You have searched me, LORD, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely (Psalm 139:1-4; NIV).

Father,
Thank you that I can approach you
Just as I am.

I don’t have to be strong,
Or knowledgeable,
Or clever,
Or wise,
Or good.

In fact,
I don’t need to be
Anything other
Than exactly who,
And what,
I am.

I only need to open my heart,
Whilst waiting patiently for you,
In stillness and in silence.
