Contemplation

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you (Psalm 63:1; NIV).

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10; NIV).

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

If you seek [God], he will be found by you (1 Chronicles 28:9; NIV).

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard you hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7; NIV).

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give as the world gives
(John 14:27; NIV).

Lord,
When I reach out to you
With all my heart,
I find myself at peace beside you -
Far beyond fear.

Lord,
When I reach out to you
With all my soul,
I find myself at peace beside you -
Far beyond grief.

Lord,
When I reach out to you
With all my mind,
I find myself at peace beside you -
Far beyond woe.

Lord,
When I reach out to you
With all my strength,
I find myself at peace beside you -
Far beyond pain.

Lord,
When this time for contemplation ends,
May your peace and presence
Stay with me -
No matter what life brings.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Thanks

Thanks

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever (Psalm 118:29).

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8; NIV).

But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you
(Psalm 130:4; NIV).

My Father,
Thank you for the faith you give me,
And for your forgiveness.

Thank you for accepting me unconditionally,
And for understanding me completely.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Suffering

Suffering

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me (Psalm 23:4; NIV).

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; NIV).

Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? (Job 2:10; NIV).

But those who suffer, he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction (Job 36:15; NIV).

…we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope (Romans 5:3-4; NIV).

Lord,
Please help me
Through this suffering.

Help me to face it,
Accept it,
And learn from it,
With you by my side.

Thank you for comforting
And encouraging me
Every step of the way.

May this experience
Help me reach out
To others in distress,
With prayerful understanding
And support.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Peace

Peace

…seek peace and pursue it (Psalm 34:14; NIV).

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone
(Romans 12:18; NIV).

Father, I pray for peace
Between Israelis
And Palestinians;

Peace in every wounded body,
Every terrified mind,
Every hostile heart,
And every grieving soul.

Father,
I pray for peace
Between Israelis
And Palestinians.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Self-righteousness

Self-righteousness

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned” (Luke 6:37; NIV).

“For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured out to you” (Matthew 7:2; NIV).

…no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison
(James 3:8; NIV).

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you”
(Luke 6:27; NIV).

Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it (Psalm 34:14; NIV).

“For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (Luke 18:14; NIV).

Father,
How come we are never
So sure we’re in the right,
As when we’re in the wrong?

Sure that what we’re thinking
Is wholly justified -
Even when it’s judgemental?

Sure that what we’re saying
Is wholly justified -
Even when it’s hurtful?

Sure that what we’re doing
Is wholly justified -
Even when it’s unkind?

Lord,
Please help us
To think, and say, and do
Only that which is righteous
In your sight -
Not in our own!

Peace

Peace

The Lord bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace (Numbers 6:24-6; NIV).

Peace I leave you; my peace I give you (John 14:27; NIV).

Father,
Please turn your face toward us,
And give us peace -
Peace in every angry heart,
In every anxious soul,
In every suffering body
And in every tormented mind.

Through Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Kingdom life

Kingdom life

…your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:9; NIV).

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes (Revelation 7:17; NIV).

…the kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17:21; NIV; alternative reading).

Father,
In the kingdom of heaven
There is no war or exploitation,
No suffering in body or mind,
No violence or abuse,
No cruelty or malice,
No selfishness or hatred,
No bitterness or envy -
Only love.

Lord,
May I live your kingdom life
Right now,
And may your will be done on earth,
As it is in heaven -
In all our lives.

Through Jesus’ name,
Amen.
