Reading the Bible

Reading the Bible

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16; NIV).

Don’t forget my words or turn away from them (Proverbs 4:5; NLT).

Jesus replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice (Luke 11:28; NLT).

Holy Spirit,
I’m sorry to be
So ignorant
About the Bible,
Slowly wading through it,
Then forgetting
Most of what I read.

Please help me
To remember,
And to practice,
What I learn
Through studying
God’s Word.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Judgement

Judgement

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me” (John 14:6; NLT).

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1; NLT).

But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness (Romans 2:8; NLT).

Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you deserve (Psalm 90:11; NLT).

Lord,
We are sinners -
Our lives amount to nothing
Without you.

Please forgive
And heal us.
Help us to follow
Your dear Son -

For there is no other way
We can be saved
From your judgement, wrath,
And condemnation.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Officials, leaders and rulers

Officials, leaders and rulers

Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth! (Psalm 2:10; NLT).

Justice – do you rulers know the meaning of the word? Do you judge the people fairly? (Psalm 58:1; NLT).

So Jesus called them [the disciples] together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else (Mark 10:25-42-4; NLT).

Lord,
I pray for all officials,
Leaders and rulers -
Those with power
Throughout your world.

Please fill their hearts
With wisdom, love,
Justice, peace,
And mercy.

Help them to serve
Their people fairly,
So they can stand before you
Without shame, each day.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Faith

Faith

“How frail is humanity! How short is life, how full of trouble” (Job 14:1; NLT).

“They suffer painfully; their life is full of trouble” (Job 14:22; NLT).

God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them (1 John 4:16; NLT).

Lord,
Faith doesn’t make life easy.

We struggle and suffer -
But we do it all with you.

Thank you for being with us
Every step of the way,

Even when we feel
Far from you.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Home

Home

God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them (1 John 4:16; NLT).

“Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them” (Revelation 21; 3; NLT).

Lord,
You open your heart,
Inviting me
To make my home with you.

So I dare to open mine,
Inviting you
To make your home with me.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Sin and love

Sin and love

It’s your sins that have cut you off from your God. Because of your sins, he has turned away and will not listen any more (Isaiah 59:2; NLT).

Clouds and thick darkness surround him (Psalm 97:2; NIV).

The LORD your God is a devouring fire (Deuteronomy 4:24; NLT).

Jesus replied, ” ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind’ ” (Matthew 22:37; NLT).

Lord,
Sin clouds my mind,
So I can’t see you;

Thick darkness fills my heart,
So I can’t find you;

But fire burns in my soul,
So at least I can love you!

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Prayer

Prayer

“Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home” (Matthew 8:8; NLT).

I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to me, your servant (Genesis 32:10; NLT).

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow (Psalm 51:7; NIV).

…the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7; NIV).

God is spirit (John 4:24; NIV).

Father,
I love you so much,
But I’m not fit
To approach you.

Please forgive and cleanse me,
So I may draw nearer to you
Each day,

Till death
Unites my soul
With yours once more.

Through Jesus’ name,
Amen.
